Subject: Bentonite and landscaping

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
Saw a thread yesterday about getting water to flow away from house basement-a project we started just this morning by digging up existing landscape rock. Previous homeowners had tiled around outside of house 8-10 years ago. Backfilled with black dirt along south side (so they could plant shrubs and flowers)-we dug those out 6 years ago, thought we shaped and filled in correctly at the time, but seems to have settled down again. East side we have discovered 12-15" of landscape rock, and then pea gravel. In the process of digging out the 15" of rock getting down to the pea gravel. Plan is to backfill with some clay dirt. Those two sides we have had a couple of water issues in basement. Poor gutter design, doing the best we can with that also.

Had email conversation with fellow NAT'er about using bentonite to help seal up area and get water to run away from house. Googled it, haven't really found any good info about working with bentonite. Given above sketchy info, anybody got any ideas or thoughts about possibly using bentonite. Any how to hints greatly appreciated. thanks Bruce
