Subject: RE: late pollination question

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA
The only thing I know about when we'll see tassels is that they will be late this year. I have not looked for tassels in our May planted corn, but we might see tassels next week in the first fields. Without a 90 in the ten day (and Thursday at a high of only 74) in the time of year now when the heat should really be on, I'm really starting to wonder if some late planted corn might just run out of growing season this year. Our latest corn was planted in mid May, but I know of silage corn here that was planted near the middle of June, and some sweet corn that was put in on July 12. (Too late even for a normal year, IMO) Late sweet corn is doomed if things continue like this, and even if we end up getting the needed heat all bets are off if there is any kind of early frost.

It's hard to complain because it's clear that many areas are getting weather much worse than this.
