Subject: RE: Seeding Alfalfa Orchardgrass

Chilliwack BC
This spring we notilled into an old grass field we killed off. We also used a companion crop of barley. We mixed them and seeded them all together at about 1/4 inch deep with a Sunflower 9312

100 lbs barley
30 lbs orchard grass
5 lbs alfalfa

It worked alright but 1/4 inch is too shallow for the barley and any deeper is too deep for the alfalfa.

Last spring we seeded the same rates but into worked ground and did it in 2 passes, using a brillion for the alfalfa. It worked very well.

This was the first time we have ever seeded alfalfa and we have very little experience with it.

For fertilizer, we used lots of dairy and chicken manure.
