I'm not a corn expert but in my experience that 2nd ear is very common but rarely fills. On some plants it might fill halfway. One year i had a lot of greensnap and where the stand was thinned out i noticed that the 2nd ear filled well in those areas-i think that helped to reduce the yield loss some. It appears to me that low populations are more conducive to the plant filling 2 ears.
