I agree with most of what you guys are saying here. The other thing I would look at, and you can kind of see it in the 7/11 photo, is that the lower lying areas are stunted. These beans were also seeded into an unworked hay field. I think that in these stunted areas you could be simply dealing with compaction problems. In these areas, the soils could be extremely tight, causing the plants to work hard and succeed a little.


You're in the ball park.  The shorter plants in the picture looking down the rows are definitely in areas that were eroded over the years and are working with a much higher clay content. I'm sure those areas are much tighter than the other areas of the field. The past few years you could see the bales thin out in these areas just as if you were looking at a yield map. There were many years put into putting this field into the shape it's in, It'll see terraces in the near future and I'm sure it'll take a few years to get it headed in the right direction.
