The Great Leap Forward was a Communist Party attempt to "industrialize" China...... I read one account which stated that farmers were ordered to turn over their farm implements to the State for scrap iron, much of which ended up being exported. Tens of millions died of starvation and government brutality. The actual number of deaths is unknown, but I have read estimates of 50 million plus.
