If you're going to be shooting hogs across open fields, anything over about 200 yards, you probably would appreciate a larger caliber. I'm not saying 400 yard shots aren't possible with a ,223!, but just sayin..............you will probably appreciate the bigger one. On the other hand, a .223 can be a real handy rifle to have around if you don't want to haul something long, heavy and expensive around with you. If you're not used to big guns, I would suggest something like a .243 to start with. Or find someone to hunt with and try out some different rifles. Probably not the best idea to go out and purchase a XXXX (you fill in the blanks) "Magnum" until you're sure you would really like one.

Then you need to do some practicing, not just shooting, but estimating ranges and then stepping them off etc, so you can make those long shots.
