Don't have to be exactly level but you do need to be in exact the same spot.

I've tied something in the drawbar to mark the dirt, then check to see if it comes back in the same spot after the calibration.

You can't rely on the tires to be set the same from the center.They hardly ever are.

I use the drawbar method at least once a year and preferably more often.
