Definately try to adjust the linkage first. Lube it like Loren suggested. It doesn't take much adjustment to make a difference. Does yours have the 2 lever style shifter or has it been changed to the 3 lever style? There were a lot of issues with the earlier style. Alot of them got changed over. Good luck.
