Northeast CO | If you can find an automatic, with a manual transfer case you could tow it without the engine running.. a 5 speed 4x4 is kind of hard to find, but they are out there. Around 6-7K for a decent one. If i remember right the auto 4x4 S10 with the 4.3 gets around 18-20mpg. Never checked the 5 speed, because its usually got towed miles on it.
Where about are you located? I know of a few in my area that are for sale.
