Shoal Lake, Manitoba, Canada
Bakelite is the right name. I soak the dial and handle in a full strength solution of
Simple Green cleaner for about a half hour which will soften the old lettering so it
can be removed.

I then smear white paint all over the embossed letters and numbers, let it dry, then
lightly wipe them with an acetone wet cloth which leaves the paint in the letters and
numbers.

2 coats of Clear Coat protects the letters and numbers from any further yellowing.
