Subject: VRD speed on JD planters

Western PA
Can someone tell me what speed sensor/source is actually used to control the VRDs on JD planters. Running one 1770NT-xp 12 row, w/ 2630 and one 1790 12/23 w/ 2600.

On the 12/23 planter, we are pulling it with an JD 8760 and the radar is the only speed source that is able to be set in the 2600 (other than setting a manual speed). We can not get the radar to read a consistent number - may jump to 1 mph while sitting still. I understand that this effects the population readings (bar graphs and documentation), but is it really effecting what's being put in the ground? From what I can tell in the OM, the speed sensor on the planter wheel is for safety only and seems to be either on/off - not necessarily sending a speed signal to the controller. I don't know why you wouldn't want to run the planter off of actual planter speed... I also don't understand why you can't select GPS speed, since this seems to be pretty accurate.
Thanks!
