North Central Illinois | I didn't write the farm bill. If they took away the direct payment tomorrow you would hear no complaints from me. The direct payment has little or nothing to do with ethanol. Mandates are a touchy thing and I do understand why some don't like them. Ethanol is cleaner, is a renewable resource, and is good for the ag economy. If gas made from crude was ten cents cheaper than ethanol people would choose the crude gas even though using ethanol would be the right thing to do. If Joe consumer could save a couple of bucks instead of doing something to reduce our independence on foreign oil, nine times out of ten they will choose the cheap route. Sometimes we need a little nudge to do the right thing. Thats how I look at the mandate. I realize others don't see it that way and I respect that position even though I don't agree. Yes, we do get a lot of oil from Canada but we also continue to rely on mideast oil and subsidize it. | |
