jd8850 - 4/9/2011 06:36 Nice "theory", because that's all it is. Would like to talk to those "people in the know". The 1850 did not have grease zerks (pretty hard to grease); they froze up, know that personally--traded it off on 1860, which, again does not have zerks. They froze up shortly after we got it, so we were going to be 'nice' to it, drilled & tapped 100+ holes for zerks (because that's what the latest and greatest 1890's/1895's had) and they froze up too--grease/no grease. It's the nature of the beast; it's not IF they freeze up, it's WHEN.

For the 60 & 90-series drills, there are kits that seal up the pivot points on the closing wheel arm and firming wheel arm.  The proven top-choice is from R-K Products.  Deere now has their own as well, and they're fairly similar.  The bushings inside the casting are seated farther inward (closer to each other) to make room for the seal.

The R-K kit is a permanent fix.  Just grease them once or twice per year, and they'll run nearly forever.
