I am all too familiar with that particular pain.
A tough lesson in life ( and the alternative ) for your 8 year old, but sadly one that needs to be endured in preparation for being a well adjusted grown-up.
I dont think we do our children or ourselves any favours if we continually deny reality, as tough as it is at times.
