Iowa
I heard once that the average distance food on your plate traveled to get there is 1,200 miles.

Also, a few months ago, WalMart said they were going to get something like 10% more food "locally" grown. Well, that still means that 90% isn't. And what they meant by "local" is grown in the same state. Well, if you live in Sacramento, CA, and your "locally" grown produce comes from Southern CA (San Diego area), that's 500 miles, which isn't what many people would consider "local".

At certain grocery stores in Iowa, they'll say "locally" grown item x that comes from Southern Missouri. How is that local? Very good article, I doubt some people realize the scam when they see "locally" grown food that comes from hundreds, if not thousands of miles away.
