Interested in your mention of soft Red. What would have happened to it at this time of year? Since we only grow superhardy HRW and then only occasionally, I am not up on what causes most wheat losses- here it is either flooding from a mid-winter chinook or more likely, dessication from freeze drying throughout Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb etc etc.

Typically, southern Alberta and the northern prairies have better luck with their winter wheat, Alberta because it is more like western Montana for climate and the North because of more consistent snow cover.

Lately, wheat breeders have not concentrated so much on competing with HRS for quality but have more concentrated on low protein varieties for feed and ethanol uses. For our central and northern prairies it has produced some 100 bu yields over the past few yrs.
A landmark not thought possible only a few years ago.
