Consider the application and needed life. If it's a hard use and hard to install, then good chain is probably the way to go. If it's easy to replace, gets used only a little or lightly, then sits and rust until the next use, cheap chain may be a better choice. The other factor is sprocket wear, marginal chain can get hard on them. Diamond brand chain is another source of superior chain.
