cdsmith - 3/11/2011 05:33 Replaced the JD firming wheel with the CIH wheel. It worked better than the JD wheel and lasted longer but still had problems plugging and sliding in mud or with corn stalks plugging them. Ended up taking the wheels and arms completely off and it planted just as well without them. A sliding firming wheel is worse than no wheel at all when it's dragging your seed out of the ground. Plus as Forest Gump would say, "One less thing".

I realize that northeastern SD has had some nightmarishly soggy spring conditions the past few years, which has probably led to your conclusion.  But for most of the world, most of the time, removing the firming wheel (or Fin, or Keeton) is an utter disaster waiting to happen.  Especially when running spoked closing wheels.
