Subject: Re: Thoughts on a 8970

Illinois
We have a 96 8970 good solid tractor. I have heard of problems with the smaller tires and holding the tractor to the ground. Ours has 710R38 and we have no problems except for the replacement cost of the tires. 8970's are very cold blooded so plan on plugging them in if its below 40F.
A major problem we have had is the electronic fuel system. The module will go bad and the tractor will not idle down so you have to let it cool off for 20 minutes so it will idle down. We have had to replace it 3 times. First 2 times cost $800.00 and last fall it did it again and it cost $1200.00.
The starter can be a problem sometimes I have heard. You turn the key and only get a click nothing else. Some guys keep clicking the key and it will start or jump the starter.
I have no real problem with the cab, its just on the newer tractor the controls are easier to reach and better sealed.
8970's can be a lot of horsepower for a reasonable cost.
