| The best setup for conditioning was the early setup ont the New Holland 404 hay conditioner, I think it was used on the early Haybines also. A big smooth steel on top and a smaller rubber pickup roller on the bottom. New Holland advertised it as a Hay in a Day machine. Cut early in the morning on a good drying day and you could bale that afternoon. We never failed to bale the next day unless it was raining, period.. The one downfall was that it would plug occasionally. New Holland came out with the chevron rollers so it would feed in all crops.IMHO. No other design than the original setup has ever done the job right . The 404 split the stem from one end of the stem to the other end. I am sure that some College Boy would say it was to rough on the hay. But it sure was nice getting Alfalfa up here in Ky without rain and bleaching damage. | |
