Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada | Isn't it funny how a small disease outbreak can change the beef industry? Before BSE, wasn't Canadian beef sold in something like 60-70 countries? Now I think the last number I saw was that Canadian beef was being sold in 70-80 countries. Even if the US never opens up to over thirty month cattle (which I hope doesn't happen), we are well on our way to establishing markets that are just as profitable as trade with the US. Now, we still have a way to go to get back to pre-BSE prices and this is going to take some time, but it can be done.
When you look at it, at least something good came out of BSE. Before BSE everyone was relatively content with selling to existing markets, with little development of new markets. Now we know that we can't rely on a few countries for the majority of our exports. So people have, and still are, actively seeking out new markets, opening up new opportunities all the time. |
