Didnt a 'hand' originally , and Im talking centuries ago,correspond to the width of the ruling king/queens 'hand' or something along those lines? 4 inches appears to be the commonly used measurement but in days long since passed your horse may be taller or shorter depending on who reigned the 'kingdom' at the time. One of the interesting little carry over measurements from the past. Did ya know people in the UK still weigh themselves in 'stones" ? LOL
