my dad had that problem with his house in town. he put in a big (5-6") brass gate valve with a shutoff rod in the sewer line. that solved the problem. only thing is you had to be there to actually shut off the valve. after my dad died, i had to go to town to shut off the valve for my mom, if there was a big rain.
