Ours stays on when not in use.  Doesn`t hurt a thing until a hose blows overnight and the pump runs for hours on end unattended.  Was an interesting start to the morning with the noise and the vapour inside the shop.  I bet that a cheap pump would kill itself in short order after overheating like that.
