Canmore Ab. Canada
Well, we tried sitting around and doing nothing and that didn't pay and so we figured since a farmers time isn't worth anything anyways...
Sorry, couldn't help my self...
We don't get rich on it but several other things come into play.
1. In our irrigation we get alot of straw and it becomes a real challange to deal with it. We had a 135 acre circle of Hard Red Winter Wheat this year that produced nearly 1000 bales of straw. After we removed the straw we did a light tillage because we want to seed canola and then timothy into it and we could hardly get through it with a cultivator.
2. If you have men and machinery and can spread fixed costs over more units it helps all areas to be more profitable.
3. Some following crops do better with a little less soil cover the following year. A 2-4 inch mattress of straw is just too much. If we till we loose our soil to the chinook winds.
4. We do give up nutrients and in high fertilizer price years it is a consideration.
5. You know where I'm from. You??? We may live in areas that are dramatically different in what it takes to make the wheels go around.
6. Probably other considerations too. You have valid points but all considered we do OK.
Dan...
