You might try one of the clamp on starter draw ammeters on one of the cables. will work only when in the DC setting. For AC, you could use one of the tong type clamp on ammeters designed to read AC loads, if you can find one large enough.. Test well away from the welder case, as the magnetic field of the welder transformer will mess up the readings
