Sheldon, IA | Keep in mind that varying population by soil type may not be the best way to base your prescriptions. One reason is that many soil type maps are still from the 60's and 70's and we have changed the soils a lot since then with drainage and fertility adjustments. Also what variety you use will impact where your population should be just as much or more then soil type will. As a company, we take as many factors into play as we can before we create VRT planting recs. We use past yields, soil type, soil sample results, and variety choice as our most common factors. No online tool by any company is going to for free. We also throw in learning blocks to see what would have happened if we increased population in an area, decreased it, or left it alone. These new online tools are neat and easy to use, but agronomically they are rarely the right way to do this. When you spend up to $300 for a bag of corn, you do not want to go out there and guess on where the population should be in your field based on soil type. I could go on about this a lot longer. If you want more information let me know. | |
