Subject: RE: Leica systems?

We have a Leica MojoRTK that we use to control our proportional steering valve on our MFWD tractor. It is a very accurate system. We have a base station since CORS is not available in our area. We set a wood post in every field and then we take the base station and a 12v car battery with us from field to field. A crappy old car battery will run the system for at least 12 hours.

By doing it this way, we have accuracy that is better than what we could get through the local John Deere or Trimble networks. Not because Leica is better than John Deere or Trimble. I do not believe that. The only reason I think it is more accurate is because our constant close proximity to the base station. With a John Deere or Trimble network we would almost always be at least 6 miles away from a base station, probably more.

So, as far as the reciever in your tractor being accurate, Leica will compete with the best of them in my opinion.

As far as how your tractor uses that accurate signal, it depends upon your situation. If you have a cost effective option to make the Leica receiver control a proportional hydraulic steering valve, you've got one good thing going for you. If your tractor is a heavy MFWD tractor, you've got another thing going for you, because the tractor will go exactly where it is steered to. If you've got a lighter than recommended 2wd tractor pulling a heavy implement with an electric steering system like an EZ-Steer or a JD ATU, your tractor positioning will suffer even though the receiver accuracy will be exceptional. We used to run the MojoRTK with an EZ-Steer in a JD 4840 pulling a 16 row JD 1770 planter and a Flexi-Coil 1720 air cart. The steering was pretty good, but it's definitely better now that we have a MFWD with a proportional hydraulic steering valve.

Finally, you have to consider the entire system. Do you enjoy piecing stuff together to get the things done that you want to get done? For example, we have to make our Leica system work with our Ag Leader stuff sometimes, or with our Precision Planting stuff, or who knows what all else. Leica doesn't offer some of the things that other companies offer, so you have to be ready mix and match stuff a little bit. It's not the hardest thing in the world, but sometimes it doesn't always work out exactly like you would hope in an ideal world.

Finally, price is a consideration. When we bought our system it was when they were first introducing them and it was significantly cheaper than what they are available for now. You need to compare the price of a Leica system, plus all the accessories that you'll add to it to get it to do what you want (like an Insight or a 20/20 to control your planter or sprayer shut-offs) and see how that cost compares to the cost of a John Deere, AgLeader/AutoFarm or Trimble setup. Depending on your needs and the relative costs, the Leica may be for you, or it may not.
