I think if you find a reasonably short tractor with a bunk and setback front axle it'll probably turn around short enough for any tralier you've got behind it.
If I had the choice between removing a bunk or swapping a transmission I'd remove a bunk, hands down, no questions asked and that's not even considering autoshift. Just find one with a removable bunk and it's a pretty simple job. Integral sleepers are a lot more work...
