yoohoo - 10/20/2010 17:58 ...I agree with you on corn having trouble buying acres for next year. The yield drag found in corn on corn this year was greater than normal, but i really wonder how much can be attributed to the late harvest, lots of trash from the cooler summer, and poor conditions for chisel plowing. All which i think led to Nitrogen tie-up in the organic matter which usually would have been broken down by spring in a normal year. This year is presenting the opposite conditions all around. My personal opinion is that much of the surprise in corn yields this year is from the related combination of excess moisture and the crop running out of N because of leaching. Crops with split application/side dressing, in general, suffered much less surprise at harvest than crops that had ALL N put down last fall or preplant. jmho and observations. Jim at Dawn |
