Several 4.3's and never a head gasket problem. Not a hard task, unbolt intake and exhaust manifold, remove valve cover, pull head bolts. If the head doesn't need work, it's just a matter of cleaning up the head and block and installing a new gasket. Put everything back. Couple hours if no problems/additional needs. Gaskets are pretty cheap.
