BUT DOES NOT START/ 41E, 72E ERROR CODE MAY BE DISPLAYED------

MAXIMIZER AND 10 SERIES COMBINES


COMPLAINT OR SYMPTOM:
ENGINE HAS SHUT DOWN AND CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START. ERROR CODES MAY BE
ON THE DIGITAL TACHOMETER.

PROBLEM:
1. VOLTAGE TO ECU IS INTERRUPTED BY A DEFECTIVE CIRCUIT BREAKER OR
WIRING HAS A OPEN CIRCUIT. VOLTAGE INTERRUPTION TO THE ECU WILL
CAUSE A 72E ERROR CODE.
2. START SIGNAL IS NOT GETTING TO THE ECU. WILL CAUSE A 41E CODE.
3. EMERGENCY FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE ON INJECTION PUMP IS NOT OPENING.
FUEL SHUTOFF PROBLEMS WOULD NOT CAUSE ERROR CODES TO BE DISPLAYED.
4. IF ENGINE WILL SOMETIMES START AND THE PROBLEM DOES REOCCUR THEN THE
FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE CAN HAVE AN INTERMITTANT OPEN IN THE COIL OR THE
HOUSING FOR THE VALVE DOES NOT HAVE A DRILLED PASSAGEWAY.

SOLUTION:
1. CIRCUIT BREAKER IS NEXT TO ECU ON THE BACK PANEL OF THE ENGINE
COMPARTMENT. REPLACE CIRCUIT BREAKER AND VERIFY THAT ECU IS
RECEIVING VOLTAGE. CHECK FOR A VOLTAGE DROP ACROSS THE ECU WITH THE
ENGINE RUNNING. A VOLTAGE DROP GREATER THAN 0.3 VOLTS WOULD INDICATE
A BAD CIRCUIT BREAKER. CIRCUIT BREAKER IS PART OF THE AH108414
SUPPRESSOR UNIT. WIRE 16A TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT RELAY PANEL CAN
HAVE A OPEN CIRCUIT ALSO.

2. (41E CODE ONLY) WIRE 107 FROM THE STARTER RELAY TO THE ECU CARRIES 12
VOLTS WHEN THE KEY SWITCH IS IN THE START POSITION AND TELLS THE ECU
TO MOVE THE RACK TO THE START POSITION IN THE PUMP. A CODE 41E OCCURS
WHEN THE ECU IS RECEIVING ENGINE RPM DATA BUT NEVER RECEIVED A START
SIGNAL ON WIRE 107. TEST FOR VOLTAGE ON WIRE 107 WHILE CRANKING AT
THE ECU CONNECTOR. IF THERE IS VOLTAGE THE PROBLEM IS LIKELY THE
CONNECTOR ITSELF. IF THERE IS NO VOLTAGE THE PROBLEM IS IN THE ENGINE
HARNESS.

3. TEST FOR VOLTAGE AT THE EMERGENCY FUEL SHUT-OFF VALVE ON THE
INJECTION PUMP. IF VOLTAGE IS PRESENT THEN REPLACE THE FUEL SHUT-OFF
VALVE. THE REPORTED PROBLEMS ON THIS VALVE HAVE MOSTLY BEEN BOSCH
UNITS ON 253 HP 9600 COMBINES. BOSCH INJECTION PUMPS WITH A DATE
CODE OF 067 (JULY 90) OR LATER HAVE THE LATEST SOLENOID DESIGN FOR
THE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE. FAILURES ON PUMPS AFTER THIS DATE CODE
WOULD REQUIRE THAT PARTS BE RETURNED FOR ADDITIONAL FOLLOWUP.

4. TEST THE SHUT OFF VALVE BY REMOVING IT FROM THE INJECTION PUMP AND
HOOK UP A 12 VOLT SUPPLY TO THE VALVE. OBSERVE THE VALVE TO SEE IF IT
WILL CONTINUE TO STAY ENGAGED. ALSO, REMOVE THE RETURN LINE FROM THE
VALVE HOUSING AND CHECK FOR A 1/2 MILLIMETER HOLE DRILLED IN THE
HOUSING AND CHECK IT FOR BEING PLUGGED. THIS HOUSING IS BOSCH PART
NUMBER 241 339 0005.
