Fall armyworms and earworms can and will reduce yields over 30 bushels per acre from Rt 36 south. The next problem they cause is aflotoxins that start where they have been feeding. That can be just as bad if not worse than the ear feeding has already been done. In the areas noth of Rt 36, western bean cutorms can cause the same problems as the earworms or fall armyworms. The western bean cutworms start feeding in the middle of the ear insted of the tips. They don't canabalize each other like earworms. I have seen three earworms on an ear before so they don't really cannabalize each other until the kernels start drying out. Don't think that these pests are a minor problem. They take 238 million bushels of corn each year.
