I changed the oil in mine a couple years ago, don't remember having any problem. I just looked at it again. I think a 9/16 open end wrench would work on mine.

Edit: I tried the open end 9/16 wrench tonight and I could loosen the plug, but mine wasn't frozen either. I also have a set of "crow's foot" wrenchs that might work as well as a crescent wrench. (Crows foot wrench don't really have a handle, just a square opening that a 3/8's {?} extension would fit into so a breaker bar or a rachet could be used for leverage.)
