Subsurface tape comes as close to 100% efficiency as you can get.  Overhead systems typically are somewhere around 75%, and it isn't uncommon for them to be a lot worse than that, especially in areas with high wind.  Most furrow systems have to apply at about 150 percent of need at the head of the ditch to get sufficient water to the tail end of the row.  You pay a lot more for tape in both materials and labor, but you save a lot of water and it goes to the right place to do the most good.
