Subject: errors in kernel count yield estimates

Oswald No-Till Farm Cleghorn, IA
Greetings,

That is a potentially nice ear of corn.

Years ago, when selling Pioneer seed, I played with yield estimate equations. It can be a fun exercise but is often open to numerous errors in hybrids that have very large or very small kernel size.

On this forum recently, there have been examples where guys are getting extraordinary high yield estimates in genetics that produce greater than 16-18 row ears for example.

We learned last year that ear/kernel yield estimates are also affected by starch density that you don't see and can't estimate. And, last year, the second ear was consumed when the plant filled the dominant sink. Nighttime temps and cloudy or clear skies during the day have a big impact on kernel fill as well.

So, I spend more time looking at plant to plant consistency and overall ear development by hybrid. From there, past experience will likely get you into the ball park as much as kernel counts.

No doubt, if you have 32,000 of those ears/acre and they fill with good quality corn, you should have a fine yield. Time will tell as it does every year.
