Like a lot of things soil types will play a role in how much N your crop needs. Our clay timber soils take more N to produce a bushel of corn than our black soils do. On 1st year corn I usually apply approx 200# of N and on COC around 235# N as there's no N availabilty from beans. However, we do decrease P & K on COC compared to 1st yr corn. I usually use the same N rates on clay & black soils but yield goals are higher on the black soils
