| Can't say I have heard anyone mention that before. But I do have people who us those Tweco tapered contact tips and nozzles but that was for the sole purpose of gaining access into tight spaces.
You would assume that since the hole in the end of the nozzle is much smaller compared to a standard shroud, that the velocity of the welding gas would be much higher than normal. This is what would make it easier to weld in the wind.
About all you can do is turn the gas up, and try to block the wind, and as you said use the tapered tips.
You could also use gasless mig wire as this stuff has no problem in the wind. Peter Australia.
