First thing John, the old 7.3's didn't rely heavily on a good oil pressure system like the current powerstrokes. Just because it's low on oil has nothing to do with the fuel system working correctly so it will start. If you have oil on the dipstick, provided you havn't fubared anything internally running it like that, its not the issue.

Secondly, if the glow plugs work fine and you used ether on it, You might consider yourself damn lucky if you didn't bend a rod or blow a gasket or stretch the head bolts. Never use ether on a glow plug engine unless the glow plugs are unhooked. Thats like using a match to check the level in a gas tank. Big Booms.

So considering it sputtered and tried to run but didn't lock up or make a big boom....... I'm fairly convinced your glow plug system isn't working as well as you think it is. How do you know the glow plugs are working? What did you do to check them?

As Larry said, make sure your fuel system has all the air out.
