We are pretty much in the process of converting our operation from strickly grain to more of a livestock operation , and am trying to get a idea of dollar per acre returns livestock vs grain. Alot of the land involved is what most would term prime producing corn ground, 200bu plus yielding. ( Hard to pull away from grain with all the supports for grain production). On the other hand we hope that the kind of ground that produces those yields will support forage groth in the same manner and allow us to carry a higher average animal per acre rate espeacially using rotatioal grazing. Looking forward I see a greater prospect for the ivestment in a cow ($ 12-1500) returnibg over 5-8 years, than what I see for corn with its ever increasing yearly imputs ( as high as $450 a little over a year ago) Just seems to this might be the right time to change and right thing for me. Forgot the one most important asset, a son with an animal science degree from Northwest Missouri State.
