Subject: Leaf color versus light spectrum

I have recently started growing relatively large trees indoors. Long story but I got a ficus and it challenged me so I got a Japanese maple and it challenged me more and you know how it goes. Anyways, growing a maple tree indoors is quite a challenge and I have ended up using tuned spectrum high intensity LED lighting to supplement the natural light. I have blue spectrum lights (which are supposed to encourage leaf and trunk growth), red spectrum light (which are supposed to encourage blooming and fruiting), and mixed spectrum (purple). So when we see a color it means that the thing we are seeing is absorbing all the light but the color we are seeing. So my question is this- does a plants leaf color indicate to you which spectrum of light the plant prefers? Does the fact that the Japanese maple with red leaves tell me that it would prefer a different spectrum of light from the ficus with green leaves?
