Rain usually penetrates twice the depth of the amount of rain, so your soil got moisture from the rain down to 3". It was your corn's life saver.

I've planted too shallow and the corn came up in patches, where it did get to moisture and where it was in dry dirt and didn't receive enough rain, it was slow to come up if at all.
