Subject: Painting for the RUST Belt ???

central - east central Minnesota -
Living in the SALT State - winter salt use on roads is really wrecking paint and metal on trailers and skidsteers that get pulled in the winter months, when the roads are like beach side sea spray - Anyone with experence painting trailers that has surface rust (most paint is gone) as to the best process? Is it possible to make it last 5 or more yrs?  What about galvinizing, for trailers ? Short of stainless or aluminum, what'll work on mild steel to retard rust?  What's the painting methods on new vehicles now, they seem to last a few years as compared to the 70's.  TIA
