If the second notch seems to be working for you in your conditions then by all means stay with it. My observation above is mostly based on JD planter feedback. The White planters have a very different closing wheel downforce spring notch to down force relationship than the JD. You want enough spring to keep them from bouncing is about all. Try a couple rows on the first notch and compare which way you like them. The key thing is to check you seed depth once in awhile to make sure the seed is at the bottom of the seed slot, at uniform depth and pressed into the soil lightly. There can be real loose soil above the seed but not under or alongside the seed. Jim at Dawn
