| We supported Stuart Birrell at Iowa State in developing a corn head-mounted stand counter. It worked. Also, Stuart's major professor in grad school, John Hummel with the USDA-ARS (since retired) had developed a light-interupt method for counting corn stalks at harvest...it also mapped stalk diameter. Both mechanical whiskers and the light-sensor methods created some very interesting maps showing useful management information, but no one has commercialized this technology and made it available to growers.
