Subject: RE: Weevilcide failure in alfalfa

Central Kansas
I think no-till al is on to something. In Marion county weevil detection was at 5-10% feeding about 10 days ago. By Monday we could find 1-3 weevil per stem which is a massive increase. It is entirely possible that the numbers originally overwhelmed the synthetic pyrethroids which are generall slow acting chemicals. The addition of 4-8 oz of Lorsban seem to have helped in our area but I'll be re-checking some early sprayed fields tomorrow.

The other thought is the size of the alfalfa and environmental conditions. Our rep really gets nervous if we spray Baythroid before 6" in height. I know some hay got sprayed earlier than that. Finally, a huge drop in temp will slow the weevil down and therefore slow the kill but usually that stops as soon as the sun and warmth comes back.
