Some guys want it so deep that newly planted corn has loose soil below it, so loose that the planter sinks into the ground. We are the opposite, just deep enough to get the weeds and tracks out. This year our planter cut a trench below the depth we ran the cultivator. With the winds and hot temps for two weeks the corn germinated nicely as the trench did not dry out. Some have had to quit planting because of dry seed beds and woked soils are by far worse than untilled..
