Ripon, WI | You could get by without aerating, but I believe that might take a bit of luck. With 20 degree corn, as far south as you are, the condensation could be very severe in your bin. The idea of warming the grain is to try to minimize that condensation. Your stirring equipment is a great asset in keeping crusts from forming. Unless this is a drying bin, it will take much longer than a couple of hours to put an aeration "front" through that corn. A very key part to aerating grain is to make the grain the same temperature all the way through before shutting down the fans. When you turn on the fans, make sure you spend several minutes near where the air is leaving the corn. That might be in the bin top, if you push in through the bottom, or at the fan itself if you pull down through. Then you will be able to put your nose to work and smell any potential problems. This year's crop is not a quality keeping commodity. Everyone needs to watch carefully as it gets warmer outside. | |
