The old timer's way was to wait until the leaves on oak trees were the size of squirrel's ears. Most of the past 39 years with a pin oak in the front yard of this rental, I've found that coincided with 56 degree soil temperature at 2" depth. Much corn is planted earlier than that and just sits there and I've planted much later and its shot out of the ground almost as soon as the stuff put into cold mud.
